AGNES WATER/TOWN OF 1770
Situated half way between Bundaberg and Gladstone in SE Queensland Australia, Agnes Water is the northernmost consistent surfing beach on the East Coast of Australia.
The town of Agnes Water was created to take pressure off Town of 1770 (latitude 24°10'9.33"S, longitude 151°53'7.56"E, "Seventeen Seventy, Australia" in GoogleEarth).
After a name change in the 1970s from Round Hill Creek, 1770 was still very isolated due to the atrocious state of the roads, and only visited by fishermen and of course, a dedicated band of surfers who made the trip here regardless of the damage to their vehicles.
Agnes Water has a soft spot in the hearts of many who have made the trip, which today, is much easier as tar sealed surfaces mean that anyone can get here.
Horror stories of surfing trips here in the old days abound, and all the pioneers have nostalgic views of the days before tarseal. Probably modified by nostalgia but most are funny in hindsight. The surf was all that mattered.
Agnes point, when it goes off, is a surfer's mecca, but there are many beach breaks along our 5km town beach which work well too. Originally known as a longboard break, and performing well for them even when the swell is low, when the surf is up, it's anyone's wave.
Every year in March is the Longboard Competition, a special event for many longboard riders. Some of our young guns are doing well on the national scene with Ben Fesselet becoming Junior Men Longboard Champ for 2006.
We also run the Cult Women's Surfest, a female only surf competition now in it's 3rd year and becoming incredibly popular with the entrants. This event caters for all ages from primary school upwards.
Reef 2 Beach Surf coaches teach surfing to our local primary school kids on a weekly basis, nurturing the future of the sport, and making lessons fun.
Reef 2 Beach Surf Shop started life in a corner of the town service station and when the first shopping centre was built in 1987, moved to it's present position where it is the first shop you see when coming over the hill into town.
We carry all the major brands of surf clothing including Aztec Rose, Billabong, Qicksilver, Cult, Voodoo Dolls, and many more.
There is a large range of surfboards available too, from Bruce Palmer, Classic Malibu, etc and including our own brand. In fact, any sort of surf toy you want we are sure to have.
In 2007 the surf shop will move again to brand new purpose-built premises next to the servo and will be bigger and better than ever before.
Reef 2 Beach Surf runs a surf school every day of the year bar Xmas day. All that is required is that you front up at the surf shop at 10.00 am and sign on, it's as simple as that.
You get an hour lesson with dedicated professional surf coaches, run under the auspices of Surfing Queensland. The coaches are fully trained and do their best to get you standing on a board in the lesson.
The surf here is gentle and the beach is safe, you couldn't find a better place to learn. Did I mention cheap?
After your lesson you can hire boards to continue honing your new-found skills, or just play in the surf. The water is warm all year round.
Every day we have a surf report online, with photos of Agnes Water town beach taken that morning. This includes a surf report from Lombok by an ex-Agnes surfer, check it out.
Added to that we carry information on surfing competitions in our local area, and other items of surfing news that relate to Agnes Water/Town of 1770, including our flagship events, the Cult, Reef 2 Beach Women't Surfest, a very popular women only event held in February, and the wildly popular Reef 2 Beach Longboard Classic held in March.
We welcome photos of breaks from other parts of the world and if they inspire you, that is great.
We have a collection of photos taken on private trips to the reef which is only 30 nautical miles offshore from here. When it works it produces some spectacular waves and great rides.
See the Surf Report page for entry forms.
For information on either or both clubs as it comes to hand, check out the page just for that.
